The Tower of Babel

The Tower of Babel
By Patie Kwik.

(Leading Scripture. Genesis 11:1-9)
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
"INTRODUCTION"
People have always, and still are endeavering or trying to magnify themselves and lift up their hearts to succeed in life whithout God. Adam and eve fell in their attempt to be like God (genesis 3:1-6). And then the descendants of noah also defied God , planning to reach the heavens by building "the tower of Babel". They built a city and a tower so that they would never be scattered over the earth again. It was also to be their safe place incase a flood would come again in the future. But above all, their desire was to display their own power and glory through it, but they failed to completeit. "This lesson will teach us how man failed to build the tower because his motives and attitudes towards God were wrong.
"Babel, a Tower of Confusion"
The number one factor in their failure to conplete the tower was the confusion which came upon them. "BABEL means CONFUSION". When they were busily constructing the tower, God confounded their language. And they immediately "thought" differently, "talked" differently, and they "acted" differently, all of a sudden the builders realized that they were "incapable" of co-operating with eachother to finnish building the tower and they were "divided" into groups that spoke the same language. of course, our heavenly Father is pleased when we are united with one accord for the sake of His glory and good will. The builders of the tower of babel were also united, however, they were going against God's will, so He had to stop them building the tower by confounding their language.
Even today, to achieve a certain thing successfully there must be unity. to lead a successful life we should always work in unity and watch that no confusion approaches our daily living. Jesus said in (Matthew 12:25) And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: What does that mean?, it mens that when we are divided,"we fall". The devil always causes confusion to divde people so that God's work will be thwarted (stopped to a standstill) and people will fall away. "Therefore", we must be on our guard so that the enemy of our soul will bring division. . We must remove any kind of confusion and disharmony "from our hearts", "from our homes", "from our social life", and "from our churches and bible study groups". We should do our out-most to allow the "Holy Spirit" to keep us in "the unity of the spirit", so that we could become "one in Christ".
"Babel, a Tower of Pride"
Another reason that the descendants of noah failed to complete the tower was that they were "filled with pride" before God, and that they attempted to place themselves above His word. Pride is against God's will, and our sin always originates from pride. "Proverbs 16:18" teaches us, Pride goes before destruction, and a proud spirit before a fall. From the very start of their even proposing to build the tower, their motives were contradicting God's good will and glory. If they wanted to build a tower in that location for the purpose of having a close-knit unity among themselves, that was a direct chalange to the command of God because after the flood they were commanded by God that they should have many young ones and grow in numbers upon the earth (Genesis 8:15-17). If the tower was to be built in preparation incase of a future flood, that was a sin disbelief of the promise of God, (Genesis 9:15) And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. If they wanted to display their power and honour to the next generation, through the tower, that is clearly an act of "pride" placing themselves ahead of God and His glory. They deserved ill for their deeds, and for this reason all of their purposes were not achieved but they failed instead. Therefore, we should always guard ourselves against pride, when we become self-conceited and boast of every little success we have, thats when we fail. The sure thing that follows is destruction, pride always brings along with itself a "Tower of Babel", and the "tower of babel" always causes confusion. We must always be "humble" before God and other people, and we must always be allowing God's word first in every and all circumstances.
"Babel, a Tower of Rebellion"
Most of all, the builders of the tower suffered confusion, chaos and failure because they asteemed God's word too lightly. God commanded them, that is, the children of noah, to multiply and spread over "all the earth", but they said to each other in (Genesis 11:4) And they said, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. This was a direct challenge and rebelllion against the command of God. When they rebelled against God, God caused chaos by confounding their language, a very wise move on God's part, so, when the poeple were unable communicate with each other, they could not understand each other, and where there is no understanding, there is "jealousy", "resentment", "strife", "bitterness" and "contradiction" with each other, and where all these things are "division" is sure to follow.
Today, if the sin of despising God's word enters any "individual", "home", "society" or "nation", confusion begins and it eventually becomes a devastating destruction, destroying the very foundation and existance of that person, home, society or nation. "The tower" that is called the home of a family, and "the tower" that is called "society or nation" collapses through the sin of opposing the command of The Lord God. Human history proves this sufficiently. We all know only too well those countries and churches which feared God's word became powerfull and prospered, while those countries that despised the Gospel are being destroyed by war, why?, because they failed to believe the truth.
"Closing Notes"
For us to lead a successful life, we must eliminate all the elements of the confusion and division that may be called "towers of babel" in our lives, let us eradicate all the babelic poisons in our everyday living and march forward in complete harmony of the Holy Spirit, when we do so, all our purposes and our work will succeed in bearing good fruit, and then we will surely enjoy God's abundant blessings in our lives and in our endeavers.
